The Fool of the Tarot

The Fool of the Tarot is the pure, undifferentiated, divine creative energy. It is Innocence, universal in movement, neither attracted nor repelled by anything in particular, bound by nothing, restricted by nothing, fresh, open, alive.

The Fool is fluid, subtle, evanescent. He is Silence, utterly beyond comprehension or intuition. He is the definite-but-wordless, mysterious, ineffable answer to the riddle of the Sphinx: What goes on four legs in the morning, on two legs at noon, and on three legs in the evening? The Fool is unchanging in essence but serves every purpose. He is utter Simplicity.

The Fool is the Egg, the Zero, Bacchus, Pan, nothing and everything, polymorphic, perfect in equilibrium. It carries within itself no distinction between any one thing and any other thing. It is neither outside nor inside, neither male nor female, neither good nor evil. It is the Crowned and Conquering Child. It is the balance of all opposites. It is the annihilation of the Universe in itself.

The Fool is grinning, eyes glittering, wild, joyful, simple. He wanders and wanders.

We come to notice the Fool in Spring, when that which is wild, bold, and innocent within us stirs like flowing sap.

Eric N. Peterson is a Toltec priest and member of The Tequihua Foundation, a Riverside, Southern CA nonprofit whose mission is to continue the ancient consciousness-transforming arts of the Toltecs. The Aka Dua is an energy prepared by a particular Toltec line. The Aka Dua assists in the alchemical process of transformation by which an ordinary human becomes the shaman.
